staying hungry : orange flesh melon

There are only a handful of foods I'm not enthusiastic about. Crustaceans top the short list; I just can't do crab/lobster/shrimp. I don't love tofu. I'm learning to not hate mushrooms. And while I have a fervent affection for all fruit, I've never really been on board with cantaloupe and honeydew. They always get the shaft in my fruit salad cups.

So when I was offered a sample of orange flesh melon at Wegmans over the weekend, I was initially hesitant. 1: Because orange flesh melon is a cross between cantaloupe and honeydew. 2: Because eating things that have the word "flesh" in the title is moderately to majorly disturbing.

Cannibalistic or not, none of that mattered after I tasted this melon. I couldn't get one in my shopping cart fast enough. People...it's SO GOOD! I'm obsessed. And the combination possibilities are really endless here. You can do a fruit salad with blackberries and bananas and mint. Or as a simple side with a little sea salt and lime zest. Or just plain, frozen chunks as a summer night treat.

I may have to buy stock in this fruit.

I've never even heard of orange flesh melon! But I had the same thoughts as you: namely, anything with "flesh" in the title is not something I want to eat. I'll check the grocery store tonight and see if they have them! Granted, King Soopers is no Wegman's so I may be disappointed...
